Migraines are a common ailment that can cause throbbing headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea. Managing migraines often involves a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and avoiding known triggers.

Medication Can Help Provide Fast Relief

Medication can be a lifesaver for those who suffer from migraines, providing fast and effective relief when needed. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be effective in managing mild to moderate migraine attacks.1

Two prescription medications that have shown promising results in treating migraines are Ubrelvy and Emgality. Ubrelvy is an oral medication that targets a specific protein in the brain that is associated with migraines. 2 It has been shown to provide fast relief for many people, with some experiencing relief within 2-hours of taking it. Emgality, on the other hand, is a monthly injection that blocks a protein involved in the onset of migraines.3

Retreat to a Dark and Quiet Room

When a migraine strikes, it’s important to find a quiet and dark place to retreat to. This is because migraines can cause heightened sensitivity to light and sound, which can worsen symptoms and make it difficult to find relief. 4 Turn off the lights and close the curtains to create a dark environment, and try to reduce any ambient noise that might be present.

Apply a Cold Compress

Another simple and effective way to find relief from a migraine attack is to apply a cold compress. A cool compress may help reduce inflammation and ease the pain associated with migraines. Additionally, it can also help numb the affected area, further reducing the pain.

Apply the compress to the affected area, such as the forehead or back of the neck. Hold it in place for up to 15-minutes at a time, taking breaks as needed to prevent skin irritation. 5

Essential Oils May Help

Essential oils are often used as a natural remedy for migraines and may help alleviate symptoms when used correctly. 6 Peppermint oil is a popular choice for migraine relief, as it contains menthol which may help to soothe headaches and reduce tension. Lavender oil is another commonly used oil for migraines, as it has calming properties that may help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
